They embody processes that have proven sucessful time and again. For highly effective selling there are 12 clearly identifiable steps. Highly effective sales people don't try to take short cuts. They want to make money instead so they apply these steps because they work.<br />

Although each step of the sales process will be discussed in detail later, the diagram on the next page provides an outline of the complate selling process. However, because of the nature of their products, some salespeople do not need to follow all 12 steps.<br />

The First step of the selling is to find markets that will produce the best possible result for your investment of time, effort and expense. To achieve that you need to know who your best client are. In other words, 'who has the need, want anda money?'<br />

When you know the type of person or business who producess your best earning sales, you can look for the markets in which they work, live and play. You can determine a 'profile'--that is, a description of the type of person or business who will vield the best result consistetly.<br />

That description will be your Best Client Profile. When you have that, you search for people or business who fit that profile.<br />

<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Step 2: Research your prospective clients</span></i><br />
<br />
The idea of research is to compile a list of peoplewho fit your best client profile and to have as much as information about them as possible. They are your prospective clients.<br />

When you have your list you will need to get in touch the people on it. You can do that by sending a pre-call letter, an introductory leaflet, a newsletter, or simply by phoning them. Whereverpossible, you should have a handwritten introduction from a client or third party.<br />

That's because regardless of how effective you are at everything else, if you don't have people to see you can't complate any sales. The minimum number of introductory meetings fo most salespeople is two each day.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Step 7: Apply the prospect filter</span></i><br />
<br />
The prospect filter ensures you stay in control of your job rather than let it control you. How? by choosing which prospects you want as clients. It's the point where you decide to sell right then, to arrange a planing meeting or simply not to proceed with that prospect.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Step 8 : Attend a planning meeting.</span></i><br />
<br />
This step only upplies you have decided to set up a separate meeting, usually inh your office or in your client's office, to analyse your client's needs detail. Such analysis will enable you to consider your client's needs and wants carefully and to prepare several options that will meet those needs and wants best. It's the way of the highly effective professional.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Step 9: Present your options in person.</span></i><br />
<br />
When you have worked out the option for your client you will arrange for a time to submit them. Almost always, you should present them in person because while written submissions can look highly professional, clients can't ask questions of submissions.<br />
<br />
In those cases a client can form a negative judgment too quickly. Given the absence of anyone to explain issues or to assure the client, premature decisions are more likely.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Step 10: Get the order</span></i><br />
<br />
Getting the order is the logical outcome of all your work to date. For highly successful salespeople, it gets the adrenaline flowing. For mediocre player it's the step they prefer to postpone. And so they find other things to say, more points to explain, and generally talk themselves past the sale, losing it completely.<br />
<br />
Getting the order should flow smoothly. It is bit separate step. Provided you have presented your story professionally, high-lighted benefits for the client and pointed out how these benefits will satisfy their stated ideas, needs and wants, then getting the order is a matter of routine.<br />
<br />
Nevertheless, it is also the point where we can encounter a client's 'procrastination barrier'. To encourage them to 'procrastinate later' we need a portfolio of proven responses, letters from satisfied clients, positive news articles relating to your product or service and true third-party stories that are relevant to their situation.<br />
<br />
We also need communication and negotiation skill to:<br />
<ul><li>Identify areas of misunderstanding on the part of the client.</li>
<li>Elicit any concerns, doubts or fear of what might go wrong after the purchase.</li>
<li>Summarise the major benafits of the proposal in a logical and succinct way, showing how they will help your clients satisfy one or more of their major goals.</li>
</ul>Chapter 8 provides a comprehensive guide to getting the order, examples of proven responses and techniques to help you become a better negotiator in completing sales.<br />
When you have the order, get it down on paper and have your client authorise it. In the meantime, the main thing to remember is obtain written recommendations.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Step 11: Obtain written recommendations</span></i><br />
Where will your next clients come from? how can you ensure you will have a constant stream of clients to call? Written recommendations are the best way to build a profitable-and pleasurable-sales business.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Step 12: Apply an effective client service program.</span></i><br />
To become a highly affective salesperson and to earn the highly effective income that goes with it you will need to take a long-term view of your profession. You will need to build a growing business a register of clients who are pleased to see you and who are happy to give you recommendations of their business associates, acquaintances, friends and relatives. The Key word is service. Provide an effective after-sales service by keeping in touch and attending to client enquiries and problems.<br />
<b><span style="color: #3333ff;">The Highly effrective salesperson</span></b><br />
You can see the importance of developing an effective selling process. But that is not enough. You also need to work on developing the personal charateristics of a highly effective salesperson. For example:<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Believing</span></i><br />
Belief shows. The first sale you need to make is to yourself. You need to be sold on the company you represent. You need to believe in yourself, in your product and in its benefits for people. Client want to see that you believe in waht you are selling. If you don't, why should they?<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Caring</span></i><br />
It is not difficult to recognise salespeople who still sell to their own pockets. Your cleints have dreams, needs, problems and wants just like you. The old saying 'people want to know how much you care before they care how much you know' is as true today as ever. You need to develop a genuine liking for people. To do this you need a genuine liking for yourself. Knowing that you conduct all your business in a caring and honest way will reinforce yourself-esteem and help you achieve success through Personel Excellence.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Asking</span></i><br />
One way to show you care is to ask about your client's ideas, goals and background. By asking questions you get information that helps you to help them. You determine your client's wants, then use your skills, knowledge and product or service to help fulfil their ideas, needs and wants.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Listening</span></i><br />
Many salespeople listen, but do not hear. Highly effective salespeople listen with empathy. They listen to understand, not to reply. Some salespeople are so anxious to say what they want they complete their client's sentences. If that sound like you, try counting to five each time your client finishes a sentence. Then listen--really listen. Your client is telling you how can help them own and enjoy the benefits of your product or service. As someone said, 'God gave us one mouth and two ears, intending they be used in that proportion'.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Showing</span></i><br />
Have you heard the cliche 'one picture is worth a thousand words'? As fas as learning, understanding and retaining information are concerned, it's true. We absorb far more information visually than we do aurally, and even more when it is shown and explained simultaneously.<br />
Your presentation needs to show how your product or service meets the objectives of the client. (A simple diagram can explain a complex point far more effectively than can a torrent of words.)<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Helping</span></i><br />
Clients need to see what you aim is to help them get what they want at the best possible price. They Also need to see that what you are proposing will help them. If you approach each sale with the aim of helping yourself first, your poor closing and retention rates will soon show it. Help enough people get what they want first, and they will help you get you want.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Servicing</span></i><br />
Providing after-sales service is one of the best way to grow your business. You get new business from your existing clients and recommendations to their friends and acquaintances. Also, you build a client register of people who are glad to see you. That is your security as a salesperson. But it needs to be a register of clients who are loyal to you and to your company. It's the best defence against foraging salespeople from your competitors.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Satisfying your client's needs and wants.</span></i><br />
Whether it's and idea for a high-rise hotel, marina or restaurant, a new gadget or a personal goal, each reguires a service or product to be realised. Highly effective salespeople do not sell products. They sell ways to satisfy a client's idea, needs or wants through their product or service.<br />
Theirs is a different approach to the one used by sales hacks (the discredited system of peddling by trying to fit the person or business to the product). Looking for (and suggesting) ideas to satisfy gives a wholly new dimension to selling ability. It puts the client first. it promotes Sales and Personal Excellence.<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Adapting your personality: the '<b>p</b>' factor</span></i><br />
Each of us has a baggage of habits, prejudices, views and ways to do things. And many of us have traits that can be endearing so some people, but not so endearing to others. For example, if you have a forceful, brash, outgoing personality (direct) it might intimidate a more introverted, retiring client (indirect). As sale is unlikely under those circumtances.<br />
We all have a main personality trait with a sprinkling of other traits. We also have the ability to move from one trait to another for brief periods. The important thing is to recognise your main personality trait and know how it enteracts with that of your clients, then adapt yours to be compatible.<br />
The following personality trait descriptions will help you to identify your own major trait :<br />
<ul><li><i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Self-contained --direct</span></i>. This type of person has a dominant personality, is business-like, formal, works and think fast, likes authority, gets on with the job, decisive, deals with facts, gets to the point, likes to set goals.</li>
<li><i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Self-contained--indirect</span></i>. This type of person likes to go with the flow, is conservative, slow, systematic, fears embarrassment, avoids stressful situations, likes to be prepared, protects credibility, likes to be correct, does not like surprises, makes deliberate decisions.</li>
<li><i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Open--direct</span></i>. This type of person likes to influence others, dresses fashionably, is fast, spontaneous, likes working/ dealing with people, likes respect, can be sarcastic, craves recognition, is flexible, dislikes routine, is easily bored.</li>
<li><i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Open--indirect</span></i>. This type of person is conforming, steady, friendly, works at relationships, avoids confrontation, goes along with the majority, wants attentioan, is pleasent, sensitive, patient.</li>
</ul>(it needs to be stressed that these descriptions are by no means comprehensive. There is no right or wrong trait. Our personality is an amalgam of these. However we tend to lean most strongly towards one or another.)<br />
<b><span style="color: #3333ff;">Recognising highly effective salespeople</span></b><br />
Highly effective salespeople are the 'quiet achievers'. You will know them because they :<br />

If highly effective salespeople have a secret, it is this: <i><span style="color: #3333ff;">they want to do the things low-achieving salespeople don't want to do.</span></i> Highly effective salespeople want to do them because they are committed to achieving sales and personal excellence.<br />

That means you need to regard selling as a long-term career right up to retirement. That's right! As your vocation in life! As your vehicle for achieving your specific Major Life Goal.<br />
<br />
Those who see selling as a short-term job, as a way to make a quick dollar or as something to do until something better comes along are likely to be low achievers and are more likely to fail. If you have to be forced to attend sales meetings or training sessions, prodded to do your prospecting, cajoled into studying and bludgeoned into organising your day, there is a very good chance that you will not be successful because you are not committed to selling as your profession.<br />
<br />
When you commit to a purpose , then fate moves too. All sorts of help comes from quarters you would not expect. There is power in a person of committment-the power of purpose. People are attracted to it and want to help you.<br />
<br />
<b>The ineffective salesperson<br />
</b><br />
In the sales profession I have met many 'personalities', some more successful than others. Can you recognise any of the following?<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #000099;"><span style="color: #3333ff;">Hard Workers</span><br />
</span></i><br />
They work long hours. nothing is too much trouble for them. They achieve a reasonable income through volume of effort and usually do not earn as much as others who work, not hard, but smart. They reason that working harder will make up for deficiencies in skill or knowledge. Their motto is 'there are always more people to see', but hard work alone will not guarantee success.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Creatives<br />
</span></i><br />
They are always brimming with ideas. They spend hours designing leaflets, starting new systems and setting up sure-fire schemes that keep them busy. Their problem is that they seldom see people. They're hooked on ideas, not on helping people to own and enjoy the benefits of their product or service. Rerely can they keep their minds on one thing long enough for it to work. An if it does, they will usually 'improve' it until it ceases to work at all. That's because the first success forced them out of their comfort zone. Creatives fear repeated success because it would make them repeatedly uncomfortable.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Entrepreneurs<br />
</span></i><br />
Many sales entrepreneurs suffer from an obsession called 'big-case-itis'. They see themselves as corporate high-fliers putting together one massive deal after another. Not for them the small business, the mums and dads, the singles, the pedestrian market. usually entrepreneurs aren't around long enough to learn that big cases are not necessarily those that produce big rewards.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Naturals<br />
</span></i><br />
Who need study? Practice? They're naturals. They have been endowed with the sales success gene. Naturals want to go from rags to riches in one easy step. Often they start well. However, they are almost invariably sprinters. Once they have sold to the few business they know or to their family and friends, they decline rapidly. They do not have the discipline to train for the long distance race. They are poor Self-leaders.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Heavies<br />
</span></i><br />
Can these people close? They can cajole, persuade, bully or shame any customer into buying-if only to get rid of them. They know that whatever happens, thay will get that signature on that contract.<br />
<br />
They also know dozens of ways to close a sale and usually will try them all. They use their knowledge to defeat the customer rather than to defeat the customer's problem or to meet needs orwants. They are unlikely to survive in the sales business, as no-one likes being subjected tothat sort of treatment. Heavies will have few recommendations, high cancallation rates and few sales.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Logicians<br />
</span></i><br />
What could be more effective? Computer print-outs, reports, tables, eveidence! Surely they would convince even a moron to buy! Anyone with an ounce of logic should clamour forthe product. The numbers prove it's the only way to go, right? wrong.<br />
<br />
What customers want might not logical at all. In many cases wants will outweigh need in a buying decision. 'Emotion sells, logic confirms', ia another old saying worth remembering. Highly effective salespeople deal with people,not with numbers.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">System experts<br />
</span></i><br />
They are easy to recognise because they are spend most of their time in the office. They have filing systems, index cards, computers, printers and cross-referencing cards. They create a system that takes most of their time to maintain and to update. Unfortunately it does not leave them to see enough prospective clients.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Technicians<br />
</span></i><br />
What these people don't know about their products isn't worth knowing. They can tell you about products long superseded. They need to display this knowledge, so they make a point of educating their customers to know everything too. The result is information overload, customer confusion, boredom and few sales.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">'Nice guys'<br />
</span></i><br />
They are so nice they hope customer will buy because of their niceness. It doesn't mmetter if customer really need or want the product.. How could they say no to such nice people? but they can put them off again and again. 'Nice guys' are too nice to probe for the customer's real intention. They won't ask customers for a decision; the customers might think they are not nice.<br />
<br />
At work they let others take business opportunities away from them. They agree with everyone and 'go with the flow'. Unfortunately they confuse being business-like with not being nice, and lose many sales opportunities. Customers like to see them, but usually buy from someone else.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Whiners/pukers/morale saboteurs<br />
</span></i><br />
'Guess what's happened now!' is a typical opening line. They love to whine, whinge and puke over everyone until they feel better. By doing that, they are also programming excuses for later failure. They are playing Dr E. Berne's game of 'wooden leg' (i.e. they can leter reply: 'What did you expect from someone with a "wooden leg"?).<br />
<br />
Their collagues are from much happier when whiners are away. They are masters of 'stinkin thinkin'. Workmates listen to them--they can't get away--but have litle respect for anyone who lifts themselves up by dragging others down.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Comport-zoners<br />
</span></i><br />
Phew! made it for one more pay day! As long as they can keep ahead of their creditors and earn enough to survive, comport-zoners are relatively happy. They won't do anything to increase earnings because that would mean more effort and venturing out of their comport zone. They almost fear success. They adjust, acquiesce, lower their sights. Their goal is to meet minimum requirements. As long as they can do that they are OK for one more pay.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Big spenders<br />
</span></i><br />
You only live once, right? so spend! That's what money 's for! Classy suits, expensive watches, Italian shoes, vacations, frequent dining out-those are some of the hallmarks of big spenders. Outwardly they display all the trappings of success. Below the surface can lurk people with debts--people who frequently need advances against commissions to get by from one month to the next.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Senior statespersons<br />
</span></i><br />
They are happy to listen to and advise other salespeople in the team. They live on past achievements and no longer see the need to put in a real effort.<br />
<br />
Usually they are goog members of the sales team but are happy to rest on their laurels and to have new salespeople come to them for wisdom and guidance. They might have achieved excellence in work knowledge but have lost the ability to lead themselves into doing things. They could be more productive in a training role.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Barricade builders<br />
</span></i><br />
They Love being disorganised. They procrastinate and will get around to doing everithing...one day. The piles of paperwork, unworked leads and enquiries heaped on their desks are barricade that gives them an excuse not to see people.<br />
<br />
They feel exposed without their barricade and will seldom catch up because they have so much to do. Customers would only interfere with their plans.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Clutchers at straws<br />
</span></i><br />
They have this person who will buy that, that person who will buy this and a dozen more who will buy something else. They're all hot and will buy soon. The trouble is, soon rarely comes. They do all the work, run around in a world of delusion and waste everyone's time.<br />
<br />
Instead of testing the customer to determine genuine interest, clutchers at straws' will hang on to the slightest word of encouragement as if it were a promise to buy. Every time they are asked 'whatabout this prospect and that client?' they will have another reason to delay bringing in the contract.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Perpetual students<br />
</span></i><br />
They haven't time to sell. They must study this, do that course, learn that legislation, ask so-and-so about this and that. They are hooked on amassing knowledge, not on helping people enjoy the benefits of their product or service.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: #3333ff;">Drifters<br />
</span></i><br />
They tell you (in confidence) 'I'm only here because I have to be' can't find another job), and 'when something else comes up, I'm out there'. They drift through life and seldom find what they really want to do as soon as things get difficult and therefore require extra effort, they want to drift elsewhere.<br />

<b>Why choose a sales career?</b><br />

For one thing, to make money or to earn a living you have to sell something. If you are direct salesperson, you determine what your service is worth the commissions you are able to generate. Highly effective salespeople have their own reasons for choosing selling as their life's work. These include freedom, the chance to earn an above average income, meeting a variety of people, helping enrich people's livesand independence. Whatever their reasons, selling enables them to become a self-made, self-led person. It can provide the opportunity to become one of the most highly paid people in the country.<br />

There are no tricks, no preconditions. The more they earn, the more their company loves them.<br />
<br />
<b>The Market For Salespeople</b><br />

A casual look at the 'positions vacant' columns of your daily newspaper will show a variety of employers who are always in the market for salespeople. Some advertisements are quite misleading and promise thousands of dollars in weekly earnings without setting out job details, funds required to start and so on. Usually those advertisements are accompanied by the promise: 'no experience necessary'. These jobs can causemany applicants unnecessary anguish.<br />
<br />
However there are many reputable sales companies that offer rewarding and highly satisfying careers. Nevertheless you need to accept that a career as a salesperson requires as much-if not more- work and dedication as does any other job that promises high rewards. For the majority of salespeople it can take months, if not years, to learn their profession exceedingly well.<br />

A most sales positions offering the highest rewards tend to be commission-based, it would be wise to have a reserve fund of six to 12 months income before you start calling. That's because commission selling is very much like running you own business. It take time to make it profitable. But when you hang in there and apply your self, you'll discover the rumours you've heard about highly effective salespeople being among the highest paid earners are most certainly true.<br />

Salespeople bring the lates develovments to a client's attention. For example, a business would soon stagnate if it stopped seeing salespeople because it would have seased to educate itself on the latest innovations and improvements.<br />
<br />
<b>Even buyers hate to be 'sold'</b><br />
<br />
have you ever walked into store where, before you had a chance to look around, sales clerks pounced and asked if they would help you? if you're anything like me, you would have found that irritating. That's because we love to buy, but hate to be 'sold'. Moreever, we like to buy from someone we can trust. We want to have confidence in the integrity of their advice and in their ability to provide aftersales service.<br />
<br />
We all have idiosyncratic reasons for buying a thing or for not buying it. Generally the reasons people don't buy include:<br />
<ul><li><i><span style="color: #000099;">No Trust</span></i>. This means: I hear what you are saying, I can see I have a need and how your product can meet that need, I know I need it now but I don't trust you or your company to do the job for me.</li>
<li><i><span style="color: #000099;">No Need</span></i>. This means: I trust you and your company. I can see how your product can help other people and why they should buy it, but I don't need it.</li>
<li><i><span style="color: #000099;">No Help</span></i>. This means: I trust you and your company. I can see I have a need but I can't see how your product can meet that need.</li>
<li><i><span style="color: #000099;">No Hurry</span></i>. This means: I trust you and your company. I can see I have a need and how your product is perfect for it, but I've got no reason to buy it now.</li>
<li><i><span style="color: #000099;">No Money</span></i>. This means: I trust you and your company, I can see I have a need, that your product meets that need and that I should buy it now- but I can't afford it! (In other words, for me to afford it I will have to give up something else. Prove to me it's worth it. Or I want it, but can't see a way of paying for it. Show me how.)</li>
